- Tubera, lone ESC special elections bet, answers students’ questions in Miting de Avance.
Written by: Kevin Glenn Yee | Karl Tubera, running for Secretary of the Engineering Student Council under the flag of LAKAS - Thomasians Unified towards Genuine, Optimistic and Nurtured Governance (LAKAS -TUGON), faced and answered the students’ inquiries in the Miting de Avance held last Friday, September 7, at Room 54. Being the lone candidate running in the special elections, Karl Tubera, stood in front of the audience unchallenged. With no other candidates to debate with, the Miting de Avance’s format was changed into an open forum discussion. Tubera started by laying out his platforms, Ukit: The Engineering Academic Week 2018, Gear Up: PRC Accreditation and Project: Explore the Engineering Experience (E-CUBE). After his introduction, the UST Engineering COMELEC opened the discussion forum. When asked about the conflicts of PROJECT: E-CUBE, the planned UST ESC Newsletter, with the Thomasian Engineer’s, being that the latter is already handling the majority of the proposed sections of the E-CUBE for the past years, namely, SINGHAP (Literature), MULAT (Newswriting) and HALIGI (Humans of Roque Ruaño), Tubera responded that he did not foresee during his planning the conflicts between his project and that of the student’s official publication of the Faculty of Engineering. He added that since it is still just a concept, changes can be made in the future. Tubera was then asked what he can offer to boost the academic excellence of the studentry aside from seminars and workshop, which he replied with a project of his during the proposed academic week that the achievements of those in the Hall of Fame, found in the Engineering Lobby, be posted in the center of the said lobby to give inspirations to the students. In regards with his stand about the removal of abstain in the voting choices, Tubera agrees that it should be removed. The discussion ended with the question why the students should vote for him. “If you want me to help you improve the creativity side of a Thomasian engineer, if you want to help me value the knowledge of that of a Thomasian engineer, then you should vote for me po.” The special elections will be held on September 10 to 14 for the 4th and 5th year students only. The Miting de Avance was organized by the UST Engineering COMELEC.

- Esteban, three other ECE students grab top spots in PLDT Summer Camp 2018
FOUR students from the Electronics Engineering Department grabbed the top three places in the PLDT Summer Camp 2018 held at the Innolab Mandaluyong, last July 24, 2018. Marinelle Esteban bagged the overall championship with her project 'Long-Distance Voice Activated Home Automation System'. Kiko Del Rosario landed second with his project 'Digitized Systematic Project Management Tool'. While, Angelika Ong and Pauline Sotta won third place with their project 'QOS & Customer Experience Metrics: Android Application Prototype'. Esteban, together with a student from Ateneo de Manila University and from the University of the Philippines, came up with an idea that can be productized by PLDT. The project aims to provide voice activated home automation system that does not require the use of internet. She stated that the 'Internet of Things' is already a reality and one of the most prevalent applications are smart phones. “We want to make it accessible in a setting of an ordinary Filipino home and to maximize the use of existing PLDT products and services especially its landline,” Esteban shared. The summer camp, which lasts from June 13 to 27, 2018, was a special internship offered by PLDT to students from different universities. This included special activities such as trainings, seminars, and community development activities that engaged and gave students a glimpse of the corporate world. Additionally, each students were assigned to respective departments of PLDT and within 240 hours they must come up with their own unique and innovative ideas that applies the things they learned in their respective majors. The highlight of the summer camp is the 'Project Expo' and 'Revalida' where the students were given an opportunity to exhibit their innovative projects to PLDT employees and top executives. The chosen top three presented their project to the Chairman of PLDT, Manuel V. Pangilinan. Esteban shared her experiences from the camp, “Meeting new people from the actual field and sharing views and perspectives with them will be my best and memorable experience.” She also emphasized that the people they met gave them some hint on what it is like to work and how vast their opportunities can be. - UST Eng'g students represent in the highly competitive HKUST Summer Camp for Elite Students 2018
THREE engineering seniors represented the University of Santo Tomas in the School of Engineering (SENG) Summer Camp for Elite Students 2018 held at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) last July 15 to 21, 2018 . It was participated by students around the world to collaborate and learn new advances in technology. Giorgo Armand Robal from the Civil Engineering Department, Jay Patrick Nieles and Xiorence Cai both from the Electronics Engineering Department were chosen to be part of the summer camp. The event featured a combination of leadership training sessions, research talks, lab tours, industry visit, interactive activities as well as off-campus sightseeing. “In the process of applying [for the summer camp], the committee was not only looking for top students in their academics but also those who participate in extracurricular activities,” said Xiorence Cai. “Honestly, I was excited to go to HKUST, but at the same time I was also afraid to interact with people. Knowing that you are going to meet top students from other schools was nerve wrecking,” Cai added. The event had 68 participants from 24 different schools across 13 countries in the world. The camp also featured HKUST as a school for those who want to pursue postgraduate studies. Currently, HKUST is top 37 in the global ranking while its SENG was name top 15 amongst the world top 500 engineering and technology universities by Qs ranking published in 2017. “I think the summer camp changed my perspective about research and postgraduate studies. What I saw there was that their research made significant impacts to the world and some of those are obviously seen today […] I learned that HKUST has so much to offer for postgraduate studies and that it’s a great doorway to reach your dreams”, shared Patrick Nieles. “We must learn to inspire and motivate one another to pursue excellence instead of pursuing excellence for our own achievements while disregarding the people around us. Competition is a good way to motivate someone, but it will never be the key for success,” Xiorence Cai shared when asked about the significant learnings in the camp. Nicole Anne Acosta, Aldwin Ivan Ampania, Rhonor Rae Arasula, Jugielyn Gracia and John Victor Lopez also from UST placed 2nd Runner-up. Despite winning the said competition, the teams also encountered major setbacks. “On-the-spot kasi lahat binigay yung mechanics kaya doon nalang rin kami nakapag-finalize ng plan as a group.” said Rei Villarosa in an exclusive interview with Thomasian Engineer. Both teams acknowledged the impromptu decision-making as one of the challenges but were still able to overcome it. When asked about their inspiration in joining the competition, “We were just inspired to do and achieve greater things aside from academics,” Acosta said. “[...] Siguro nag-motivate talaga sa amin to give our best during the competition was the fact that we're representing the CE Department of UST,” Villarosa added.
