Three participating teams from the University of Santo Tomas’ Electronics Engineering (ECE) and Electrical Engineering (EE) Department competed during the Analog Devices Engineering Champions last November 8, 2021.

The competition was the first quiz show of Analog Devices Inc. (ADI) and part of their Engineering Fair, which hosted ECE, EE, and Computer Engineering students from 46 schools.

Participants used the website Crowdpurr for answering questions and Zoom’s breakout room for communication with their teammates.

The UST’s representatives who took part in the competition were the following: Patrick Andres, Ysiah Carinugan, and Neil Zachary De Guzman for Team 1; Marc Michael Nitro, Vaugn Irvin Santon, and Julian Angelo Canlas for Team 2; and Leighla Louisse Sto. Tomas, Denzel Josh Abunda, and Justin Kylie Zaguirre for Team 3.

UST Team 3 ended as 3rd-runner up after the De La Salle University Team 3 won against them in the clincher round for the 2nd-runner up spot. Meanwhile, UST Team 1 placed 4th-runner up.

“To be able to represent the university is already an achievement for us. We did not expect to rank since we had a short preparation time plus against big universities. When it was announced that we’re up for a clincher, we’re shocked,” Sto. Tomas, co-captain of Team 3, said.

When asked about the struggles he faced, Carinugan said, “One of the challenges I faced was the fact that it was my first time participating in a quiz competition and that made me feel the pressure. Luckily, I have my teammates and they were able to help me calm my nerves.”

Engr. Reymond D. Serafica, Engr. Harold Alexis A. Lao, Engr. Joshua B. Ancheta, and Engr. John Carlo G. Perion, of the UST ECE and EE Department, served as the school’s representatives’ coaches during the competition.
